COLOR CONVERTER GUIDE

Color Converter – Convert HEX to RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK Online

Looking for a free color converter? Convert color codes between HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, and CMYK in one place. Type a value into any field and every other format updates instantly, so you can turn HEX into RGB, RGB into HEX, or HSL into RGB without doing the maths yourself. You can also paste a color, pick one visually, or use the tints and shades to explore related colors. The converter runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and there is no signup or watermark.

HEX to RGB and RGB to HEX

Convert a HEX code like #FF5733 to RGB, or turn RGB values back into a HEX code. Both formats are the standard way to write colors for websites and CSS.

HSL and HSV Converter

Switch to HSL or HSV when you want to adjust a color by hue, saturation, and lightness or value. They are often easier to tweak than raw red, green, and blue numbers.

RGB to CMYK

See the CMYK equivalent of a screen color to get a starting point for print work. The value is an approximate conversion, so always check a printed proof.

How to Convert Colors Online

You do not need design software to convert a color code. Use the online color converter by following these simple steps.

  1. Start with any color: Type a value into the HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, or CMYK fields, paste a color into the Paste any color box, or click the large color preview to open the color picker.
  2. Watch the other formats update: As you type, every other field recalculates, so you see the same color written in all five formats.
  3. Fine-tune the color: Change a single number, such as the lightness in HSL, or click one of the tints and shades to move to a lighter or darker version.
  4. Copy the format you need: Click Copy next to HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, or CMYK to copy a ready-to-use value.

You can paste values such as #4F46E5, rgb(79, 70, 229), hsl(243, 75%, 59%), or a CSS color name like red. Transparency (alpha) is not included in the converted values.

HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK Explained

Every color format describes the same color in a different way. Knowing what each one means helps you pick the right one.

  • HEX: A six-character code starting with #, such as #FF5733. It stores the red, green, and blue amounts in base 16 and is the most common format in web design.
  • RGB: The amount of red, green, and blue from 0 to 255, such as rgb(255, 87, 51). It matches how screens mix light to create color.
  • HSL: Hue (0 to 360 degrees on the color wheel), saturation (how vivid), and lightness (how light or dark). It is handy for making a color lighter, darker, or more muted.
  • HSV: Hue, saturation, and value (brightness). Many design tools use it in their color pickers.
  • CMYK: Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, the ink-based model used in printing.

How to Convert HEX to RGB by Hand

A HEX code is three pairs of characters: the first pair is red, the second is green, and the third is blue. To convert HEX to RGB, turn each pair from base 16 into a normal number. For example, #FF5733 splits into FF, 57, and 33, which are 255, 87, and 51, so it is rgb(255, 87, 51). The same color in HSL is about hsl(11, 100%, 60%).

A three-character HEX code such as #F00 is shorthand where each character is repeated, so it means #FF0000, which is pure red.

About the CMYK Value

The CMYK numbers shown here are calculated directly from the RGB color with a simple formula. They are a useful starting point, but they are not the same as a professional print conversion. Printed colors depend on the paper, the inks, and the color profile of the printer, and some bright screen colors cannot be reproduced in print at all. Check a printed proof before a print job.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Color Conversion

Find answers to common questions about converting colors between HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, and CMYK.

How do I convert HEX to RGB?

Type your HEX code, for example #FF5733, into the HEX field. The RGB fields update immediately and show rgb(255, 87, 51). Click Copy next to RGB to copy the value.

How do I convert RGB to HEX?

Enter the red, green, and blue values in the R, G, and B fields. The HEX field shows the matching code, such as #FF5733, which you can copy with one click.

How do I convert RGB to HSL?

Enter your RGB values and read the HSL fields, which show hue, saturation, and lightness for the same color. You can also edit the HSL numbers directly and watch the RGB values change.

What is the difference between HSL and HSV?

Both use hue and saturation, but the third value differs. HSL uses lightness, where 0% is black and 100% is white, while HSV uses value, where 100% is the brightest version of the color. They describe the same colors with different numbers.

What does CMYK stand for?

CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black). It is the ink-based color model used in printing, unlike RGB, which is used for screens.

Is the CMYK conversion accurate for printing?

The CMYK value is a simple mathematical conversion from the screen color, so it is a good starting point but not a guarantee. Printed colors depend on the paper, ink, and printer profile, so check a proof before a print job.

Which color formats can I paste into the converter?

You can paste HEX codes (with or without the #, in 3 or 6 digits), rgb() and hsl() values, hsv() and cmyk() values, three plain numbers such as 255, 87, 51, and CSS color names such as red or navy.

What are tints and shades?

A tint is a color mixed with white to make it lighter, and a shade is a color mixed with black to make it darker. The strip under the color preview shows four tints, your color, and four shades, and you can click any of them to continue with that color.

Does the converter support transparency (alpha)?

No. The converter works with opaque colors. If you paste a value that includes transparency, such as rgba() or an 8-digit HEX code, the alpha part is ignored.

Can I pick a color from my screen?

In browsers that support the EyeDropper feature, such as recent versions of Chrome and Edge on desktop, a Pick from screen button appears. It lets you pick a color from anywhere on your display and converts it right away. If you do not see the button, your browser does not support it.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The color converter runs in your browser, and the colors you enter are not uploaded or stored.

Is this color converter free?

Yes. You can convert colors online for free, with no signup and no watermark.
